1. What Are Cookies and Similar Technologies?

Cookies are small text files that a website or service may store on a visitor’s device. They can be used to provide website functionality, maintain security, remember choices, distinguish visitors or sessions, and measure website usage.

Similar technologies include local storage, session storage, pixels, tags and other browser-based storage or identification mechanisms.

Some technologies are strictly necessary for the website or a service requested by the visitor. Optional analytics technologies are used by CocoaIntel only after the visitor has actively allowed Analytics.

2. Categories Used by CocoaIntel

CocoaIntel currently uses the following categories.

Necessary Technologies

These technologies support essential website functionality, security, member authentication, newsletter functionality and the storage of privacy preferences.

They cannot be disabled through the CocoaIntel consent interface where they are necessary to provide the website or a service expressly requested by the visitor.

Analytics Technologies

These technologies help CocoaIntel understand website readership, page performance and the use of publications and interactive charts.

Google Analytics and Datawrapper interactive charts are placed in the Analytics category. They are not activated until the visitor allows Analytics.

CocoaIntel does not use this Analytics category for targeted advertising.

CocoaIntel stores the visitor’s Analytics choice so that the website can remember and respect whether Analytics was accepted or rejected.

The choice is normally stored in browser local storage under:

cocoaintel_cookie_consent_v2

If local storage is unavailable, CocoaIntel may use the following strictly necessary first-party fallback cookie:

cocoaintel_cookie_consent_fallback

The stored record contains:

  • whether Analytics was granted or denied;
  • the applicable consent-version identifier; and
  • the date and time at which the choice was saved.

The preference is retained for up to 180 days. A new choice may be requested earlier if CocoaIntel materially changes its technologies or consent mechanism.

This storage is used only to remember the visitor’s privacy choice. It is not used to measure browsing activity.

4. Google Analytics

With the visitor’s consent, CocoaIntel uses Google Analytics 4 to measure readership and understand how the website and its publications are used.

The CocoaIntel Google Analytics measurement identifier is:

Google Analytics may process information such as:

  • pages viewed;
  • session and interaction information;
  • referral source;
  • browser and device characteristics;
  • approximate geographic information;
  • website-performance information; and
  • other usage events generated through the standard Google Analytics implementation.

The following first-party cookies may be created after Analytics consent.

Purpose: Distinguishes visitors for statistical measurement.
Default duration: Up to two years, subject to browser restrictions and Google Analytics configuration.

Provider: Google Analytics
Purpose: Maintains session state for the relevant Google Analytics property.
Default duration: Up to two years, subject to browser restrictions and Google Analytics configuration.

The Google Analytics script is not requested or loaded before the visitor grants Analytics consent.

CocoaIntel does not currently link its Google Analytics property to a Google Ads account. Google Signals is disabled, advertising personalisation is disabled, and CocoaIntel’s website implementation sets advertising storage, advertising user data and advertising personalisation to denied.

CocoaIntel’s Google Analytics event-data retention setting is currently 14 months.

If consent is withdrawn, CocoaIntel disables further Google Analytics collection and attempts to remove accessible first-party Google Analytics cookies from the CocoaIntel domain.

CocoaIntel’s Analytics consent choice applies to:

  • Google Analytics; and
  • Datawrapper interactive charts.

These optional services are not activated until the visitor allows Analytics.

A visitor may reject Analytics or withdraw previously granted consent at any time through Cookie Settings in the website footer.

When consent is withdrawn:

  • new Google Analytics collection through the CocoaIntel website is disabled;
  • accessible first-party Google Analytics cookies are removed where technically possible; and
  • Datawrapper charts are blocked again after the page reloads.

Withdrawal does not affect the lawfulness of processing performed before consent was withdrawn.

6. Datawrapper Interactive Charts

Some CocoaIntel publications contain interactive charts provided by Datawrapper GmbH.

Datawrapper charts hosted at datawrapper.dwcdn.net are blocked by CocoaIntel until the visitor allows Analytics.

Before consent:

  • the Datawrapper iframe is not loaded;
  • the visitor’s browser does not connect to Datawrapper through the blocked chart; and
  • a placeholder and a button for reviewing Analytics settings are displayed instead.

After consent, the chart loads and the visitor’s browser connects directly to Datawrapper and its delivery infrastructure.

Ordinary resource requests may involve technical connection information such as the visitor’s IP address, browser information, requested resource, referring page, date and time.

Datawrapper states that published charts may use its self-developed and self-hosted tracking system with cookies. This system is used to collect technical usage information and count chart views.

Datawrapper states that its published-chart tracking system does not collect visitors’ IP addresses as part of its chart-view tracking. Technical connection information may nevertheless be processed to deliver and secure the requested chart resources.

Provider-controlled cookies or similar technologies may be used after the chart is loaded. Their names and lifetimes are determined by Datawrapper and may change.

7. TradingView Widgets

CocoaIntel uses TradingView widgets to display live or delayed market charts.

According to TradingView, its embedded widgets do not set cookies.

TradingView states that the widgets process the following information for their correct operation:

  • the URL of the page containing the widget;
  • the widget type;
  • the displayed market symbol; and
  • the visitor’s IP address.

TradingView states that the IP address is required to deliver the widget and protect its servers, is retained only for a short period and is not stored together with identifiable user information.

Because TradingView states that its widgets do not place cookies or browser storage, these widgets are not controlled by CocoaIntel’s Analytics preference and may load when a relevant page is opened.

8. Google Calendar

The CocoaIntel Calendar page may provide an embedded public Google Calendar.

The Google Calendar iframe is not loaded automatically. Before it loads, the website displays a notice explaining that loading the calendar will connect the visitor’s browser to Google.

The connection is initiated only when the visitor selects “Load Google Calendar”.

After the visitor makes that choice, Google may receive technical information such as the visitor’s IP address, browser and device information, request time and other information normally transmitted when accessing an online service.

CocoaIntel’s current calendar implementation instructs the browser not to send the CocoaIntel page as an HTTP referrer.

Google may also read or use cookies and similar technologies according to the visitor’s Google account, browser and Google privacy settings. If the visitor is signed in to a Google account, Google may process the interaction in connection with that account.

The calendar load control is separate from the CocoaIntel Analytics preference. If a visitor does not want to connect to Google Calendar, the visitor should not select “Load Google Calendar”.

After loading the calendar, a visitor may stop the embedded connection by leaving or reloading the page and not loading the calendar again. Google-controlled cookies can be managed through the visitor’s browser or Google privacy settings.

9. Membership, Sign-In and Newsletter Technologies

CocoaIntel is hosted using Ghost publishing infrastructure.

Ghost may use strictly necessary cookies or similar technologies when a visitor:

  • signs in as a member;
  • requests a sign-in link or one-time code;
  • manages an account;
  • subscribes to a newsletter;
  • accesses member-only content; or
  • uses other membership functionality.

These technologies support authentication, security, session management and services expressly requested by the visitor. They are not used by CocoaIntel for advertising.

Their duration may depend on the visitor’s session, account status and security requirements.

10. First-Party Dashboards and Website Infrastructure

CocoaIntel provides first-party market, weather, positioning and trade-flow dashboards hosted through CocoaIntel-controlled Cloudflare Worker addresses.

Loading these services may involve the processing of ordinary technical request information, including an IP address, browser user-agent, requested resource, referring page and request time, for content delivery, reliability and security.

The weather dashboard may load Leaflet software from UNPKG and map tiles from OpenStreetMap Foundation infrastructure.

The COT and global trade-flow dashboards may load charting or data-processing software from the Plotly CDN and jsDelivr.

Strictly necessary security and content-delivery processing is not controlled by the Analytics preference.

If a provider stores or accesses information on the visitor’s device for a non-essential purpose, the consent rules applicable to that technology also apply.

  • select “Accept analytics”;
  • select “Reject analytics”; or
  • open “Manage preferences” and choose whether Analytics is allowed.

The same choice applies to:

  • Google Analytics; and
  • Datawrapper interactive charts.

A visitor may change the choice at any time through the Cookie Settings link in the website footer.

Withdrawing consent is as easy as granting it.

When consent is withdrawn:

  • new Google Analytics collection is disabled;
  • accessible first-party Google Analytics cookies are removed where technically possible; and
  • Datawrapper charts are blocked again after the page reloads.

12. Browser Controls

Visitors may also delete or block cookies through their browser settings.

Blocking all cookies or browser storage may affect member authentication, consent-preference storage, embedded services or other website functionality.

Browser controls operate separately from CocoaIntel’s Cookie Settings. A visitor who deletes the stored CocoaIntel preference may be asked to make a new selection.

Browser settings may also be used to manage or delete cookies placed by third-party services after the visitor chooses to load or use those services.

13. Third-Party Control

Third-party providers may change their technologies, cookie names, purposes or retention periods independently of CocoaIntel.

CocoaIntel periodically reviews the services used on the website and will update this Cookie Policy and the consent mechanism where a material change affects visitors.

Links to third-party policies are provided for transparency. CocoaIntel does not control the content, availability or operation of those external policies and services.

This Cookie Policy may be updated when CocoaIntel changes its website technologies or when legal or regulatory requirements change.

The “Last updated” date at the beginning of this Policy indicates the most recent revision.

Where a change materially affects optional technologies or the scope of consent, CocoaIntel may request a new consent choice.
