Sugar Holds Weekly Gains as Brazil Rain Risks Persist (9 October 2026)

Sugar futures edged higher on Friday, retaining weekly gains after Thursday’s sharp reversal. New York March 2027 raw sugar settled at 20.25 cents/lb, up 0.10 cent or 0.50%, after trading between 20.09 and 20.44. London December white sugar gained $1.40, or 0.26%, to $542.50/t, within a $539.10–546.80 range.

For the week, March raws rose 0.32 cent, or 1.61%, while December whites advanced $11.00/t, or 2.07%. Friday’s recovery was nevertheless modest: raws regained only 0.10 cent of Thursday’s 0.68-cent decline, and whites recovered $1.40 of the previous session’s $14.60 loss. Both contracts repeated Thursday’s lows exactly. Those levels held for a second session, but the rebound offered limited evidence that buying strength had returned.

The raw March–May premium was unchanged at 0.78 cent/lb. In whites, December’s discount to March widened by $1.60 to $12.50/t as the deferred contract gained more strongly. The matched March white-over-raw premium increased slightly to $108.56/t. Nearby whites therefore continued to lose relative value within their own curve despite the improvement in outright prices.

Lower turnover accompanied Friday’s rebound. The newly available Thursday open-interest figures show a small increase in raw-sugar exposure during the selloff and a modest contraction in whites. These aggregate changes cannot identify which participants were buying or selling. Friday’s open interest remains unavailable.
